May 03 The Isle of HarrisThe Isle of Harris is one of the most beautiful places in the world, so much so that the number of visitors, to the island, increase every year. Of course I am slightly biased as I live on the island but, for a great many years, I was simply a tourist taking my annual vacation on the Isle of Harris. I fell in love with the place and, after ten years visiting, I decided to up sticks and move. That was many years ago and I am still often amazed at the absolute beauty of this most incredible island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.
The Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles) and the Isle of Harris are unique in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Many in the U.K. do not even know that this group of islands are only a few miles off the north western coast of mainland Scotland and some find themselves surprised to hear that the islands have all the modern comforts such as electricity. One of the main reasons for this ignorance is the fact that the Hebrides of Scotland are so fundamentally different to the rest of Scotland and the UK. In many ways the islands are rather old fashioned, but in a good way. When visiting the Isle of Harris it is common to get the feeling that you have somehow stepped back in time to an era when it was safe to leave doors unlocked and when neighbors where actually known to each other.
Over the next few months I plan to add a number of posts to show visitors why the Isle of Harris is one of the best places to spend a vacation. I will show some of the fascinating places to visit and some of the wonderful self catering accommodation on the Isle of Harris. Self catering on Harris is, for many visitors, simply the best way in which to spend a Hebridean vacation as it offers the visitor greater freedom to enjoy all that Harris has to offer. However many folk would rather stay in Harris bed & breakfast so I may also take a look at B&B's and guest houses on the Isle of Harris at a later date. |
